The San Francisco Panorama

With plunging circulation and waning ad revenues, seems there’s little good news for the newspaper business these days.  Enter the literary folk at McSweeney’s, who hope to inject some zest into the medium with the San Francisco Panorama, a one-off broadsheet featuring more than 380 pages of content that will arrive next month.  Last week the publishers posted a sneak peek of the effort online that has the hipster literati salivating.

The Panorama is set to include contributions from a number of A-list writers, artists and photographers including William T. Vollmann, Chris Ware and Miranda July, and will feature print staples like comics, a magazine and book section.  In addition to being sold in bookshops, editions will be made available all over San Francisco on the day of its release.

McSweeney’s calls it a “21st-century newspaper prototype,” and while one could argue they’ve had the advantage of time on their side (the Panorama’s been in the works for five months), it definitely looks to deliver on the promise of showing “exactly how much the format can do.”
