I’ve caught this video installation in a few places over the past couple days. It’s the work of artist Chris O’Shea, who’s taken one of the BBC’s Big Screens in Liverpool and turned it into a playful – if a little sinister – experience. Passerby appear on the video billboard via a live camera feed. A giant hand appears atop the footage that can “tickle,” “stretch,” “flick” or “remove” people from the screen… a little like a “real-time giant deity.”
From a brief statement on the artist’s site:
“Hand From Above encourages us to question our normal routine when we often find ourselves rushing from one destination to another. Inspired by Land of the Giants and Goliath, we are reminded of mythical stories by mischievously unleashing a giant hand from the BBC Big Screen. Passers by will be playfully transformed. What if humans weren’t on top of the food chain?”
